Dr Niall Muldoon, Ombudsman for Children will open the sixth annual conference of the Childrens Research Network, which takes place on Wednesday and Thursday the 29th and 30th of November. The theme of this two day event is ‘Childrens participation in research’.
In recent years there has been increasing interest internationally and in Ireland on the importance of involving children in the decisions that affect their lives. Involving children in research can enhance services, policy and practice in different settings - at home, in early childhood care, school and in care. While there has been much progress in this area, there are still many challenges. How do we involve vulnerable children, or those with complex needs? What creative methods can we use in our research that will engage children? What do we need to consider in terms of ethics, rights, regulation and consent?
This conference will explore these questions through a mix of presentations, workshops and roundtable discussions. Speakers will share experience of children’s participation in a range of policy and research initiatives. Keynote addresses include Tom McBride (Early Intervention Foundation), Paula Keenan (Children in Northern Ireland Participation Network), Thilo Kroll (UCD), Claire Finn (DCYA) and Greg Mannion (University of Stirling).
